Why is IntelliJ IDEA so slow during debugging?

VERSION 4

Created on: Oct 17, 2003 5:14 PM by Serge Baranov - Last Modified:  Sep 7, 2011 2:41 PM by Serge Baranov

The Debugger in IntelliJ IDEA may work slowly in the following cases:

  • Method Breakpoints are used (they are expensive to evaluate by JVM design)
  • Watch method return values is enabled in the Debugger Panel (IntelliJ IDEA 7.x and later)
  • Force classic VM option is not selected in the Settings | Debugger

The Force classic VM being off did it for me, that and a method breakpoint I didn't realize I had :-) .  Thanks much!

I had this problem too and it turned out I had accidentally created a method breakpoint.  They are REALLY slow!  I found it by "View Breakpoints" icon in the debugger planel
