Constant java.io.IOException: Invalid argument from terminal in Ubuntu 9.10

Test driving Intellij Idea on Ubuntu 9.10 (pretty fresh) and I'm getting lots of errors.

1) Constant Exceptions from IDEA. This showed up on my console (due to size and lack of code box put on pastebin): http://pastebin.com/G9TvAsnJ. This seems to be breaking lots of stuff. Which includes...

2) Directory tree fails 50% of the time. Yesterday I couldn't list /, today I can't list the /usr/lib directory (and subsequently can't add my jdk). This is getting frustrating.

Is this a known bug, and if so is there a solution? Am I doing something wrong?
